Description of the Federated Authentication Service
IDEM (https://www.idem.garr.it/) is the Italian Federation of Universities and Research Institutions for Authentication and Authorization.
eduGAIN (https://edugain.org/) is the inter-federation of digital identity federations of the research and training community globally.
The objectives of federated authentication are to create and support a framework, common to training and research bodies, for the shared management of access to online resources, allowing researchers, teachers, students and university employees (hereinafter users) to use the credentials of their home institution to be able to access web services offered by different federated bodies.
Users must therefore no longer undergo burdensome accreditation procedures when accessing resources (Service providers) that belong to such federations.
Each University or Federated Body (Identity provider) provides an authentication service of their digital identities towards Service providers, providing the appropriate guarantees and always respecting the privacy of users.
Use of Cookies
Thanks to the prudent use of technical cookies and redirections, users enter their username and password only on the site of the institution (Identity Provider) in a secure way thanks to SSL encryption and thus saving the privacy of their credentials.
Information on attributes release
After login, the Identity Provider of the University of Trieste requires consent to the release of attributes that describe the user (through the use of encrypted and signed cookies) and that can be used by the site that offers the service (Service Provider) in a technical way to provide the service or to profile the user (profiling cookies).
At the discretion of the Service Provider, a link to the Cookie Policy and the Privacy Policy of the service may be displayed prior to the release of the information by the University.
The release and content of the attributes linked to your digital identity is submitted to the user’s approval at the first access to each Service provider.
The user can independently request the cancellation of all approvals at the time of authentication.
Logging
Logs are not transferred or shared with any entity except in the cases provided for by law. In the management of any security incidents, only directly related and explicitly requested registrations may be used for a technical analysis of the joint incident with the Consortium GARR.
